Mathematics at CTC

Throughout the academic year, CTC students have been entered into national Maths challenges. Below is a review of the considerable achievements by our students. Congratulations to all who participated.

Senior Maths Challenge Results Nov 2017

The SMC is run by the UK Mathematics Trust and is taken by over 82, 000 students nationally
Total entrants CTC: 48
Gold Awards: 12 (25% of entrants compared to 10% nationally).
Silver Awards: 15 (31%)
Bronze Awards: 7 (15%)
71% of all CTC entrants won an award, (compared to 60% nationally).

Senior Kangaroo competition (Nov 2017)

This is by invitation only, for the highest scorers (almost all in the Gold category).
Nationally, approximately 6000 out of 82,000 students qualified to take the Kangaroo competition (7.3%)
At CTC, 13 students qualified to enter the Senior Kangaroo competition (27% of CTC entrants).
Of these 13, 2 students (Zhetao (Thomas) XU and Chenming (Kevin) WANG)were awarded ‘Merit’ (for being in the top 25% of Kangaroo entrants nationally).
Nationally, less than 2% of Maths challenge entrants go on to achieve ‘Merit’ so this is an outstanding achievement.

BMO1 and BMO2 (Dec 2017-Jan 2018)

Three of the 13 Kangaroo ‘qualifiers’ chose to take the BMO 1 (British Maths Olympiad) instead:

  • Yuyi (Peter) ZHANG
  • Dao XIANG
  • Shifeng (Leo) LIU

All three performed well but Yuyi ZHANG deserves special congratulations for his award of Distinction.
Dao Xiang and Shifeng LIU (both year 1) opted to take BMO 2 in addition, with both gaining creditable results.

Both BMO 1 and BMO 2 examinations are extremely difficult (probably the most challenging examinations available to pre-university students). All entrants are be congratulated for their enthusiasm and fortitude.

Summary:

Overall, results in 2017-18 are better than the previous year, with an increase in the % of Gold Awards and an increase in the number of Kangaroo qualifiers (even though the overall number of entrants was less than in 2016-17).

  • SMC Best in Year 11: Ioan POPA – FLOREA
  • SMC Best in Year 12: Dao XIANG
  • SMC Best in Year 13 & Best in College:  Yuyi ZHANG & Zhetao XU (Joint)

It is very encouraging to see we have some excellent mathematicians in year 11 and year 12 who will no doubt go on to achieve even greater success in the future.
